well, got a 9800 but runs funky, only scored worse than my wee ole 5200ultra i used to have in 3dmark.. its a proprietary Dell version, dont like it. i dont blame ATI though i blame Dell for putting proprietary junk. everything else in my system is perfect

DELL XPS generation2
XP
intel 875 mobo
intel pentium 4 3.06ghz HT
2GB system memory dual channel ddr pc 3200
120GB SATA hd
sound blaster audigy 7.1 platinum

No experience with these cards myself (have a Gforce ti 4600 ) but from most of the tests and articles i read, the ATI 9800 Pro/XT 0wns the current Gforxe FX 5900/5950 models.

Also alot of gamedevelopers are switching from making testign their games on Nvidia cards to testign them on Ati cards becasue the new generation Ati cards have less weird technology/funtions in them then the gforce cards...
In short its easier to create games for Ati cards then Nvidia cards these days

I have a 9800 Pro, but I have ZERO knowledge about its performance, I know that shit looks alot better now than it did w/ me old vid card!

Here'z a little small trip for you. Your system will crash less IF you stick with Nvidia through it. So, basically, the only time Nvidia iz going to pay off for you right now iz if you are running AMD with the nForce2. <---read that in an article in one of Innocent'z MANY computer periodicalz

Outlaw, what she means is that the ONLY time the Geforce card pays off is with nForce as your chipset. You have intel so go with ATi.

Aye, Graceful is running an Asus nForce mobo and Geforce and her computer benchmarks a little higher than my intel based system with Geforce.

Why don't you just go with a TI4800 and save yourself $300+ dollars. I don't think the new cards are that much ahead to be honest. It was top of the line last year and you can get if for less than $100 with 128mb DDR. I know the new cards are the latest and greatest but do your really need it? I know you don't for any of the games listed on this site.

I have been running Nvidia (Gainward) in all my systems for about three years now (AMD and Intel). Never a problem and excellent performance.

$430?!?!?!!? That is more than I paid for my new rig shipped (P4 2.8 with 512mb and NEO2 motherboard).

Sorry, sticker shock for a second there :D

OH WELL. i found a ati radeon 9800 XT 256mb for $430.. I think its the one......aaaaaaaaaahhhh! :finger:

My 5900 ultra gives all the power I need. I would NEVER, EVER pay over $400 for a video card, I don't care who makes it. In the name of better viewing, or perhaps an increased gaming advantage, is a $400 card gonna make that much of a difference? Outlaw, I would put that money into a 21" + CRT............

i already have a 55" hdtv plasma.. :rockout3:

I work at a comp store, and when i buy hardware (especially graphics cards) never buy the new $400 dollar card cuz next month it will be $200 and the month after than it will be $150. A new card comes out practically once a month, and showing a little patience with purchasing these things will save you hundreds of dollars.

Right now im running a G-force 5400 and i can do all i want.

Remember a crappy mobo with the highest end RAM Graphics card and CPU wont work. Balance systems for better performance.

When you buy a Dell or HP P.C. its all put on a preset mobo, so ive got an AMD 1800 that out performs P4 systems that come from Dell or whatever.

Right now im running an AMD 1800 with a 166 FSB 1 gig or ddr ram and a g-force 5200.

and i hate to say it but my machine outperforms P4 prebuilts, I upgrade all the time, cuz well, the machine can tuse what its given.

I suggest NEVER buy a pre-built comp.

Like i said all the fancy stuff jsut goes on the same stok mobo and the same stock crap, so all the $400 hardware is bogged down massively by the rest of the comp.

BAWK!

I would go for ATI at this time, because the are more allround without obvious weaknesses. And they are cheaper and cooler as well. Currently I am still the owner of a 9700pro and this baby still holds its own against many cards that came a year later.

The card was expensive at the time, but it still lasts and a somewhat cheaper TI4600 at that time currently chokes on real DX9 games. I think I gambled rightm as the other candidate (no GForce-FX) had to bite dust several times during the year and the 1st ones quite literaly did bite dust (they could have sold them as vacuum cleaners).

I will wait for the next new ATI architecture to come out, then wait one price drop when new models come out and then buy my new video card (several months from now)!

Also keep in mind what games you like to play, ATI and nvida both have their favourits, but ATI leads usualy by much more then NVida. Given the price I say ATI wins overall (for thise playing several different games).

Homeworld 2 looked a lot better on my brother's GEForce, but I think it was much more higher end than the Radeon 9000 my roommate has. I just wish one of the two would finally win the Graphics card war so we could have an industry standard.

trust me my mobo is my last worry.. it's the latest intel 875p 800fsb
i didnt skimp on the hardware exept the graphics. so anything i get will not be bottlenecking into my mobo.

The different CPU's like AMD or Pentium dont run hotter than others, but Ive been a fan of AMD cuz pretyy much everything ive seen shows the AMD processors out performing the Pentiums.

The processor is pretty much a bunch of digital switches, so there is an on and off.

AMD processors can compute on the up and down cycle, so they kinda compute 2 times as much info. Where as the Pentiums only work on the down or up cycle, so they are doing about half what the AMD is.

The CPU speed (aka Ghz and so) is how many clock cycles they CPU can do in a given amt of time, so an AMD 2000 will do the same as a P4 4 Ghz.

Im still kinda shakey on all this, but im pretty sure thats how it works. Thats also why you see AMD's out preform Pentiums.

Both chips have advantages tho dont gte me wrong, Im just an AMD guy.

ATI all the way, i have 2 comps, nVidia in this, ATI 9800pro in the other, and the ati urinates all over this.
Plus, the ATI cards have full support for DirectX 9.

Run Max Payne 2 on an nVidia chipset, then an ATI one to see what i mean. DX9 rox0rs
