Google this: STM31000340AS

You'll find that this references a Maxtor (Seagate) 1TB drive that seems to have a HUUUUUUUUGE failure rate. Well guess what? I have one, and it failed. It's my primary WinBlows HD so I am tickled to death to have to find some way to fawking replace the thing.

Anyone having problems with Western Digital HDs that are 1TB or larger?

They must be to delicate to be failing so much. I am glad I dont have a HUGE drive like that.

Maxtor is 'known' as a 'value' drive w/o fluid ball bearings I believe. W/o fluid, they tend to fail more often. The frontline Seagates are better, much better.

WD's have a good rep so far with the 500+ drives

Well I've known for years that Maxtor SUCKS, which is why I buy only WDs. I don't have a 1TB, but I've had no probs at all with any of the newer lines 500g (of which I have 2).

I think moocher is upset he may have lost all his "personal" movies of him and Dysed.

Yes Maxtor does suck
I never buy a drive over 500g so can't help you

Seagate has a five year warranty with their drives their service is awsome as well. As far as the data on that drive goes ( if your not having it professionally done or sending it back to maxtor) throw it in the freezer (it needs to be in a deep freeze for a day or so) when you get a new one hook it up and try to gets the files off of it, it sounds weird but I heard about it tried it and it worked.

lol Maxtor FTW

i have 2 maxtor 250gb as my storage drives which have been running for about 3 years without a hitch

a few weeks ago my 6 month old seagate 500gb just suddenly died without any warning

my main drive now is a hitachi 1tb which im praying is going to have the longevity of my maxtors

tbh its the luck of the draw there are so many factors which determine the life of a HD and i see no real diff in the any drive they are all as good and as bad as each other.

Well, Maxtor = "value branded" Segate. They bought Maxtor in 2006.

I also have a 160GB Maxtor, a 500GB Maxtor, and a 120GB WD. From what I've read, the track record on the 1TB HDD's in general is not very good. I'm thinking I'm going to go to a Samsung, since they are the ONLY brand who'se offerings above 500GB don't have a horrid reputation.

The WD Black and Green series have had a large failure rate, as well as with the Seagate/Maxtor 7200.11 and 7200.12 series. Not sure if I want to shell out the dough for a raptor or a cheetah, as my employment situation needs to improve.

<----is running two western digital blacks in raid-1TB's
<----is running two Seagate 500 mb raid

Overkill I know...however at the price of hard drives these days I could afford too. So far so good.

I am running two Samsungs 1 X 250G as my OS drive and 1 X 500G as my data drive ...

I was thinking of running the WD 1TB external as my back up drive. The computer mag I read over here has been very good to me with hardware recommendations ... so I can't see the external playing up much ...
