Forum design question

As if I don't work enough, I was asked to design a replacement website for my company. My plan is to design the main site and then start on a forum section followed by a download section. My question is, when come to forums is it best to use the whole module approach or the try to design one yourself? Also, where the hell can I find one similar to what we use here?

If you want FREE and don't need all the bells and whistles of vBulletin, then look at phpBB.
