I have a PC that had a hard drive crash so I aquired a "legal" copy of windows XP and can't get the thing to connect to the internet. It says that it recognizes the on board ethernet, but won't connect. Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

open up the router control panel and disable the router firewall also check that it set as a DHCP Server so it automatocally assigns the pc ip address

what ip has been assigned to the pc? and what is the router ip address?, the default gateway u see displayed on the status tab should match the router ip

it does but for some reason the on board lan does not connect to the router at all my laptop connects just fine. I tried the winsock fix but that doesn't work and there was another I tried but can't remember which but that didn't work. I also manually entered all the data that comes up on my laptop and it still doesn't work. I tried putting in a PCI nic that did not work either. The drivers are up to date. near as I can figure it has to be something in windows itself that is not there that's causing the problem but I'm not sure what it is.

The chances that it is a windows problem with fresh install is very slight if u have loaded the correct drivers.
Can u give the basics since we are working totally blind here.
1. Version of Windows XP (Home or Prof)
2. IP address and Gateway that the PC is currently using to try to connect to the router
3 Router model and its ip address to access the control panel

To reinitialize internet go to Start/My Computer. Go to Local Disk "C" Dbl click on windows folder. Dbl click on internet folder. Delete personalized files. (such as a file with your name).
Restart computer.........
If that doesn't work I kick the case, (Real Hard!) and reformat again.

I'll just ask stupid questions till you guys get sick of me.
Did you do any of the following things?
Check Device manager to see if the device is installed correctly? If not then uninstall and reinstall the NIC drivers
Update your workgroup name so that it matches the rest of your network?
Is your Legal version of WINXP up to date with the service packs 1, 2 and 3.
Is there a hardware issue, ie is the RJ45 Cable working properly or the RJ45 port on the router. Try using a different cable or different port.
Are the NIC property settings for your PC and Laptop exactly the same except for the last triagram of the IP. Also make sure your DNS settings are exactly the same.
Could you please give us a screen dump of the command (ipconfig /all) for both the PC and the Laptop whilst they are connected to the internet. You can do this by Clicking Start > run > then type (cmd) then (ipconfig /all) once you have the result on screen adjust the CMD screen so you can see the whole report and then push (Alt + PrintScreen) then open word or paint and click paste. This will paste a screen dump of the CMD window only.
I got sick of me asking questions, so I'm off now.
I have had so many problems with my internet connection over the last 2 years that I know all the tricks to try. My most common problem was with DNS dropping out, which can be resolved by restarting the Modem/router or using the (ipconfig /release and ipconfig/renew) command.

Just another couple of questions, do you actualy have a network where both your PC and Laptop can connect at the same time, or can you only have one or the other connected at a time?
Oh and by the way, the legality of your WINXP would have no effect on your connection problems. I have had various combinations of Legal and cracked versions of Linux, WIN98, WINXP and Vista set up in Dualboot/Triboot over the years, and never had any problems with connections because of it.
By process of elimination, the fact that your laptop can connect to the internet, indicates that your Router/Modem is not the problem. Also that your NIC is installed and working properly, which indicates that your NIC is not the problem. You are pretty much left with only one option and that is that the config of your NIC properties or internet settings are not right.
Can you browse to your Router/Modem from your PC? You can do this by opening IE or whichever webrowser you use and typing in the IP address of the Router/Modem. The address should be listed on the bottom of the Router/Modem if it isnt then you could try using either of the following addresses; 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 or 10.10.10.1 they are the most common IP's that routers use. If that doesn't work then hook up your Laptop and run ipconfig /all and see what the default gateway address is, that will be the IP of your router.

I doubt it by the way I figured it out my cable modem locks in the mac address of the first piece of hardware it connects to on startup and will not allow the connection of any other hardware until it is reset

Yer I was going to ask you about that, eventualy, You know like in a few days. Looks like you need a router, one that has both Ethernet and Wireless, that way you can hook up your laptop from anywhere in the house and still have an Ethernet connection for your PC.
I have a 3G Wireless Modem/Router that has both Wireless and Ethernet that connects to the net via a Mobilephone service. Unfortunately it is only uses a 10/100Megabit (T100) Ethernet Router which means that I have to run a second network through my Netgear Router/Nat as it is a Gigabit(T1000)Ethernet. This allows me to watch DVD Movies on my Media Center directly from my file server using Media Player without having to transfer the whole file. The file server has 1.32TB of storage space set up in a Dual Raid0 system whereas the MediaCenter only has a 320GB HDD, which is 3/4 full of Video files. The file server is about 1/3 full now. It saves me from wasting a lot of time transfering files and then deleting them when I have finished watching the Movie.
Oh dear look at the time.

Does the laptop have a Docking Station? or does the wife just use it where ever she feels like?
The best place for the Scanner would be on your PC, and then you can map the scanner via your network to the laptop, same goes for the printer. That way she can scan and print stuff without having to bother you when your playing Mercs.
