ok so see if you can solve this:

my pc was working fine. I bought a new smartphone and saw that there was a dlink dir 655 router on sale. so I bought that with x-mas $$$. I installed the software for the router and installed windows mobile device centre WMDC). After a few days i noticed a slow down on my 3800+ X2 athlon proc. in vista sidebar I have a gadget that monitors core usage. 1 core was running at 100% even though nothing was running. I thought hmmm thats strange and rebooted. pc was fine... for a bit. the time that it was ok was getting less and less until it was maxing the one core right at restart. Now I thought what you are thinking Virus, or Spyware! So I check task manager and the only process running that high was "system idle process". So I do what you would do "google" it. Says that it is nothing and only runs when you are not doing anything. Well whoever wrote that has not seen my pc. It was supposed to be unobtrusive and this was grinding my pc to a halt. Sound was choppy and slloooww. After trying to remove the WMDC and not having any change I was forced to reinstall vista.

So here I am in a nice new shiny vista install and what happens near the end of my all day reinstall.... you got it one core maxs out. So I start to thinking the only thing that is different is the new wireless router. Now I should say that one the reinstall i did not install the disc for the router. But I can still type the IP and log in and change the settings.

So back to the router. I think well I am going to unplug that bad boy and plug my old faithful Dlink Di-604 router. Guess what?

No problems.

I tried to call DLink tech support, I do not have to tell you how that went.

So before I give up on wireless and take this thing back any ideas?

Here's what I found on the subject:

http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2746782&SiteID=17
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ReadyBoost
http://www.vistax64.com/vista-general/67457-ready-boost-how-do-i-shut-off.html

my only other thing is to plug the router back in and wait until it happens again and try to turn off readyboost.

I am baffled. Remeber when this happens there is nothing but this system idle process listed as using any cpu cycles.

Thanks good luck

so. i have perfectly fine internet on my old router with the same cables. also as soon as I turn on the new router with the cables in the cpu goes to 100 % and the green light on the ethernet port goes solid orange.. the activity light still flashes.

so I am going to return the router today and try another one.

hmm that is interesting Hotrod, have a D-Link router and Stolen comp has problems where it slows down to a crawl.
Maybe it is the problem

That is a strange problem, personally i cant see how your router can affect a CPU core, i would think that its a driver issue in vista

I monitor as much of my system as i can and 2 of the most useful are Speedfan and netlimiter by using them in conjuntion with windows task manager performance tab i get a 100% picture of whats happening hardware and net wise

Zero net usage, zero Cpu usage

Ummm this may be a stupid question hotrod....but did you lock the router out in the settings to stop people in your area from using the router and your connection?

I have a DLink wireless and had the same problem until I realize my fat fawking neighbour was using the internet while I was unware. As soon as I locked down the wireless to certain Mac Addresses, problem resolved.

You see after much bitching and chewing and days of vacumming up every article I could find I found an obsure link to an article where you can sniff down and unlocked addy and use the unsuspecting victims 'puter as a gateway to god knows what. I can not find the linkage as the page expired.

Consider using the interface (192.168.1.1) and locking out the wireless componant on the router. If the problem resolves ya know some pimple faced cad sitting in Mom's basement is using your link.

Scenario two has happen to me as well on the first wireless DLink I ever had and that is the router turned out to be a factory defected variety and just exchanging it solved that problem.

Hope it helps.

BAWK!

You mean you BOUGHT a router? I do things the simple way. I get a spare computer, make sure it has 2 NICs. Install Linux, setup a DHCP server, find the IPTABLES rules for MW, and vola, an instant home-made router for just the cost of a bit of time.

Why are you all looking at me like that?

@ clepto...
on the slow computer run task manager and see if that system idle process is running. if it is you have the same problem. the other way to tell is if the back of the nic one solid orange and one flashing orange then you are connecting at 10 mb/s, solid green and flashing orange is normal.

back to solving my problem though :)

See I don't notice anything in the task bar, haven't checked the nic though

update:

now what I have noticed is that as soon as the ethernet line is unplugged from the pc (does not matter from which router) the cpu will spike and I will have to restart.

so strange. not I am leading to some kind of conflict. but i do not know what.

Ah ... so when you unplug your computer from doing any real work it slips back into 'Vista' mode ... no wonder you can't do anything else ... do you have 10G of RAM?

ok here is the latest

i was on the phone between cable and dlink from 200 pm until 600 pm today.

called cogeco to ensure everything was fine on their end and that the modem was communicating fine.

"yes it is"

called dlink to sort this out.
installed a new gigabit lan card and now my cpu spiking problem is gone.
i can pull and remove ethernet wires with no problems or freezes.

so i thought i would install the new wireless router (dir-655), which i am only using wired right now.
it will only connect locally and will not connect to the internet.
so i thought i will connect directly skipping the router. that will not connect.
the only way i can get online is to hook up my old router (di-604) and get online that way.
the release and renew buttons in the router setup are greyed out and cannot be accessed, in the dir-655.
this same thing will happen on any pc i try to use. I have 2 that I have tried it on.

so the end result is that cogeco has told me that when we ran "ipconfig" at the c prompt we get a windows error in the "Auto configuration IPV4 address" (169.254.99.154). i was told the 192 is a router error and 169 is a windows error. she would not be able to help me any further and suggested i call M$.

some how i have to get this old router to release its hold on my network.

removed new nic
restarted unconnected
installed drivers for nic
shut down
installed nic
restarted
plugged direct to cable modem
was fine
installed new dir655
got that working

now everything is good

so start to flex you brain on this

ROFL ... sorry HR ... but man-0-man ...

I don't think it is your PC that is giving you issues as much as MicroShaft ...

Have you contemplated sending your version of Vista back for a refund? ... as it obviously doesn't work with anything else remotely connected with IT that you own?

MoocherChiken

One thing that can cause issues similar to this with gigabit Ethernet are your cables. If you have middle quality Category 5 (Cat 5) or low quality Cat 5e cables, you will see issues like this because your computer is trying to speak gigabit to your router, and it's not successful, yet it keeps trying because all 8 wires on the cable are connected. The high CPU usage is a result of your computer resetting the network card a bazillion times a minute to try and speak gigabit.

This would explain why your old router with only Fast Ethernet (10/100 Megabit) does fine. Since any quality Cat 5 or Cat 5e will be OK for Fast Ethernet, your computer will be able talk to the router without having to reset the NIC 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 times a second.

Your experience with reinstalling the NIC makes me think that the problem is centered around the cable end. I would be willing to bet that if you wiggle the cable a little your problems will return. My solution would be to get a new Cat 5e cable. They're not that expensive, and if you get a Belkin, you can be sure of the quality.

Sorry it's been a while for me to respond. Work is kicking my arse, and I've just spent 4 hours under this house running Cat 5e hither and yon.

CosmicChiken

Moocher's advice is sound. You may have a 4 wire cable and you'll need 8 for GigE.

A couple of other things are also possible.

1) NIC Negotiation - If the NIC or the router are hard-coded for a certain speed, and the other is in negotiate mode, you'll run into a problem.

2) MAC Address conflict - It's possible (although unlikely) that the MAC address of the router and the NIC are the same. This only happens if you've altered them.

3) ARP Storm - If your NIC is getting an IP address on a different network than the configured IP network of the internal interface on the router, it will attempt to resolve the address via ARP (this is normal). However, a misbehaving NIC will send out continuous ARP requests until the gateway address is resolved.

4) Directed Broadcast - If the router isn't blocking inbound traffic, someone can be sending a PING to you on x.x.x.255. Most home networks use one of three addresses internally - 192.168.0.x, 192.168.1.x or 10.0.0.x. This is pretty predictable so it's not hard to craft a directed ping. It "shouldn't" be routed by your ISP, but if you're on a shared network like cable, it's possible a neighbor is sending them (thus, not routed).

Any of these four items will cause your NIC to do a process interrupt. It "must" listen to these packets when they come in, even if it does nothing with them. Thus, your CPU is busy dropping bogus crap.

Moocher's suggestion is the most likely scenrio, but these are alternatives if the cable fix doesn't work.

Bawk!

Makes me glad I have a medeocure computer with a low budget router and crappy modem. They all work fine and give me no problems.
Even bought the net gear junk at a garage sale for a buck. They gave me one of those wireless adapters that plug into your usb, with it and it works fine.
The moral of the story is, if it has a bunch of disjointed letters or numbers for a name you might have to go talk to the family IT personage to install it.
But if the same person says it's junk.......then for someone like me, it'll work fine.
Course, I still have an original release of Dark side of the moon in my 8-track too.
