To find out what motherboard you have you can download Sandra (it's free) from SiSoftware here http://www.sisoftware.co.uk/index.html?dir=dload&location=sware_dl_3264&langx=en&a then install and run it.
Start Sandra and go to the "hardware" tab and open "Computer Overview" then scroll down to the section entitled mainboard and then look for the mainboard info (between system and total memory). That will tell you who makes it and what model it is.

Then you can find your MoBo on it's manufacturer's site and find out what socket type it is.

OR you can just open the "Processors" icon under the hardware tab in sandra and then scroll down to "Upgradeability" and see what's next to Socket/Slot. (mine says Socket 939).

Once you know what socket type your motherboard supports you can look for a multi core processor that fits in that type. http://newegg.com/ allows you to search by socket type so that may be a good bet.

Odds are that you'll need a new motherboard though. The AMD FX60 is pretty cheap now (Socket 939).
