Is it ok to mix a 512 ram with a 1gb ram?

Yes but if they are differnt speeds the ram will always run at the speed of the slowest stick.

so if you have 2 256mb and 1 512 it'll run at the speed of the 256mb?

The speed of RAM is not the size of the strip ....
You need to have the same speed of the strip eg PC2700, PC3200, PC 4200 ..
If you have 2 512 strips one 2700 and the other 3200 they will both run at 2700 ...
Don't forget to check if your mother board can handle the speed as well ... otherwise it will run at the motherboard's maximum capability ...

wait could you have a 512mb PC3200 and a 512mb PC2100 but would it run at the PC2100 speed and end having about the same ram as a 512mb cos it run at the slower one?

U would have 1gb RAM running at PC2100
But to be honest not many people would notice the difference since most PC's have so many other bottlenecks that they never run to their full potential anyway.
