I'm playing Star Control 2 again

This game rocks! Checked it out on DOSBox first and then downloaded the version the open source community modded out of the code released from the 3DO version. If you haven't played this classic, I highly recommend it.

You might want to turn off the voices though. The voice acting kind of bites and wasn't in the original PC version.

Luved the way the upgrading of the ships let to a weapon that created black holes :P

I think you're thinking of another game. SC2 only has one ship you can upgrade. You can get a dohickey that sucks you into another universe for taking shortucts through hyperspace.
