View Full Version : Lag or something?

Anyone else cursed will annoying lag lately? I haven't changed anything on my machine, but now everytime I play my mech pulls to the left about every five seconds. It is not my controls, but the game itself. Conviently, this happens just about everytime I am about to shoot. It makes the game pretty much unplayable. :(
It runs fine in the single play er version, so it has to be either my settings, or the network.
I am running an old crusty P4 2800, with 512mb of DDR400 (dual channel), Surfboard 5100 cable modem, and a Linksys router.

yeah check ur joystick set-up. every now and then (at least on mine) something gets messed up. i had the "torso centering" issue before, everytime i went to fire it "jerked" and i'd miss.

Hmmm, I will have to check that tonight. Never thought of the auto centering. I know switching back to my old router didn't help. Would it only happen in multi player though, or in the single player game as well? It is not happening at all in single player.
I use keyboard and mouse by the way, I just use the joystick for throttle and the four base keys.

well then that is mouse and keys and stick :)
I have found a similar problem when I have my stick connected... sometimes the throttle control over rides the keys etc. Disconnecting stick resolves the problem.
If it is that thought, I would expect single player to be affected aswell.

It has to be my connection. I unhooked the joystick completely and it didn't help. I also swapped out video cards today to see if that would help. Now I am not running state of the art (or state of anything for that matter), but a P4 2.8gh with 512mb of DDR400 (Dual Channel), with a GeForce FX5700 Ultra (128mb), and a 10g ATA100 7.2k rpm hard drive (xp and Mercs, nothing else) should be enough to play this old stink'n game. At least I would think....
The thing that is killing me is that I was DLing the maps and patchs at over 500k/sec today. It must be my up speed that is killing me.

even on DSL the mp3 may take a while. it took me approx. 30min for that download.

It took me 2 days. Beat THAT!
You connection shouldn't affect the game engine. The one thing that I can think of that might have been overlooked is the possibility that you are running low on resources during multiplayer, because directplay takes a chunk on top of what the game uses in single player. That might cause some freaky stuff to happen.
However, 512 MB should be more than adequate, so that would be most likely a adware/spyware/virus issue if it were true.

I was thinking about it this morning and now I don't even think it is my upload speed. I have cable, so unless it is capped really low, the chances of it sucking all the time are pretty slim. I guess I will try some more memory and see if that helps. I am getting a new hard drive (Sata 150, 7.2k RPM) so maybe I will try a completely fresh install of everything and see if that helps.
Or maybe I will just go back to lag free Vengeance and play online by myself. :)

It was my freak'n power supply!!!! The damn thing finally popped (while I was kicking the crap out of the computer in Age of Empires). I figured the computer was just cheating like usually, but the machine wouldn't come back on. Anyway, swapped the power supply (400w) for a new 380w and all the problems went away. My Sata drive that wouldn't work most of the time is running perfect, my machine runs almost twice as fast (or so it seems), and the lag issue with Mercs is compeltely gone. Now when I'm getting killed like a noob, it is just because I stink at the game, not because my machine is fighting me too.
Never would have guessed the power supply... (obvioulsy)
