I have installed BF2 on my secondary drive and have attempted to patch.

I keep getting error patch has failed
Won't tell me why, just says failed

Anyone know how to manually install patch so I can designate the right directory.

I have a feeling that is my problem

I didn't install it on a second drive, but I did install it in a non-standard directory and it patched it just fine. Push comes to shove, try uninstalling it, reinstalling it, and then try patching again. Did you look to see if there was any kind of install/patch log file?
