- Arrived at brother-in-law's, drank something, put stuff in his car, drove to LANparty place.

- Arrived, moved everything up 3 stairs to an attic (which was reached by a very small/steep ladder thing), connected pc.

- Omg...everything works!!...LAN, workgroup...we see eachothers pc's...wow...first try :D

- Start copying stuff..

- Crap, no internet?..wtf...i have to update my NWN!! :(

- With pc (down 3 stairs again) to a friends house with internet conn.

- Arrived, updated NWN, back again...

- Arrived....GOING UP!! )(

- Continue copying games.....

Real nightmare starts NOW

- PC resets itself...black screen...reset..

Connect it again...

"clunk cunk...rrrrr...clunk clunk"

)( :firing:

So there i was...Lanparty...no HDD, no games, 80 GB OF HISTORY GONE!!... EVERYTHING!!!...

*sigh*

I just hope Maxtor lives up to their "3 year factory warrenty" and gives me a new HDD...or..work miracles and fix this one.

So, no games for me the next couple of weeks...
My drive has 800 MB of free diskspace left...which is just enuff to handel my internet cache..

I was wondering when you'd get to saying it's a Maxtor. I had this same exact thing happen to me around new years this year. It was just over 1 year old. Hell I still got my fujitsu drive I bought in '98, and it didn't go and have fatal PMS on me. My close friend also had this happen to his Maxtor a few months back. So let that be a lesson to you kids: Maxtor builds hard drives garaunteed to die...

I'm sorry you got ripped off by a company that has shown a reputation for building crap, Clucker. All I can say is don't buy from them again... ever.

BAWK!

I second Billy here, from a batch of 5 30GB Maxtors Diamontmax I have 3 defects.

1 Within one week,
2 after little over a year.

In tolal i costed me shitloads of hours reinstalling and recovering from data loss. I wont buy maxtor drives again unless there are no comparable alternatives.

Well, i filled in the RMA form from the Maxtor site and they'll be sending me a replacement a.s.a.p.
I just hope it gets here soon AND that its a new model, not one thats been gathering dust on some shelf.

Now, what would be a normal replacement be for a Maxtor DiamondMax Plus D740X 6L ...?

BAWK!

That maxtor 30GB that was dead in a week and was replaced at the shop i buyed it from just died as well (this makes 4 out of 6 in 2 years). NEVER trust Maxtor drives for important data, they are total rubish I tell ya.

Cluck...for your sake I hope that they replaced it with a Western Digital, otherwise you can fill in another form in a year or two (at most).

I now have two defective 30GB Dimandmax drives here, but if they replace them so easily (then there must be something wrong), i am gona try it as well. Both drives have guarantee till April 2004 and cannot be used right now!

I would be very surprised if Maxtor replaced my defective DiamondMax 8 drive with a Western Digital drive :D

The service is very good btw...i sent in my RMA form yesterday, and got 2 mails from Maxtor support.. 1 saying that the RMA form was received ok and the 2nd saying that my drive would be shipped within the next 2 days...

Now just hope they dont forget NOT to bill me :D

I would say Fujitsu, but it seems they don't make drives anymore. Got dangit, I really like that 8GB I got from them. I'm guessing you could try the competition. While they don't sport ATA133, they also don't sport faultiness. I mean I've heard way more people recommend WD, and from personal experience I know why.

You have one of these suckers that's the same capacity:

Or if you're looking for a little more space:

I thought you meant when you get enough green to buy a new one (eventually). Last I checked when they replace something they give you the same model.

Don't let Innocent in this post. She complainz about Western Digital for hourz every time she hearz the name. She had a string of WD drivez go bad on her a few yearz ago, which they replaced with the same model that did the same thing a bunch of timez until she got mad and bought a Maxtor.

I've only had 1 bad maxtor, and it took 3 months to fail completely and that's only after it wasn't turned off for two and a half years, not used in power conservation mode, treated worse than Howard Stern treats women.

Personally, I don't know how you could treat a HD worse than Stern doez women, but oh well.

They must send the crappy Maxtor drives to Europe...I've got an old 80G and it's still plucking along next to my two 250Gb WD's.

The crappiest drives I've ever encountered were by a company called Soyo...never did get one that worked.

Put your old drive in the freezer for a couple hours. Try to offload it while it's still cold. [-o<

sup chikens

a few of u might know me and a bunch of u might not, but anyhow duncan pointed me over to your forums and i saw this post and i couldn't help but respond

I have experience with every drive under the sun and on the ones posted here, here's a little insight.

Western Digital MOST EXPENSIVE 3 year warranty out of all i've owned i've had 10% fail within the warranty period and 60% fail about a month or 2 after the warranty period expired and a mere 30% still functioning. Warranty service is good becouse they offer an advanced exchange option where they send u a new drive b4 you send back the old one, although they do require using there "disk utility software" to get an error code for the warranty. This is semi annoying.

Maxtor Cheapest besides fujitsu 3 year warranty Out of the maxtors i've had i've had 3 nfg outta the box, but was able to return them with no problems from my retailer, the replacements i got are still functioning. One drive failed from an electric surge (that i caused), which u can't really blame maxtor for. I did have to return 1 drive once for a freind, and it was painless, although they did not offer me an advanced exchange i did recieve the new drive very quickly.

Fujitsu Cheapest overall (if like was said they even still produce them) 1 year warranty(probably adjusted now) the 4 fujitsu drives i've owned in my life three of them "probably" still function. I retired them and replaced them with bigger drives but never ever had trouble. I did however have a drive where a few sectors just after the drive would "forget" the data that was placed there and continually mark it free. This would fuck up a specific windows file after you defragged cuz it always seemed to stick this 16k file right in that spot. IF i rebooted and replaced the file it would be fine agian for a couple of days, then the file woudl be missing again, i ended up replacing then renaming then re-repalcing the file. This kept the system running but i was never able to defrag. If anyone can find me the fujitsu hard drive warranty phone numb er i would love them cuz i was transferred to a hundred billion differnet departments and b4 i gave up i was in a department that specifically made the spindle motors for the hdd drives.

other drives
Seagate has a similar rep to Western digital, although it took almost a month for an exchange from them...that was way to long.

I have little experience with ibm drives but the three or four i have seem to run great BUT they are hot muthers....i mean real hot...i had to stagger them in a full tower case to help disperse the heat.

there u go and i hope u guys find this usefull. In my opinion for ahome pc i buy Maxtor. FOr a business pc i would by WD.

As a comp tech I can verify that Maxtor drives are suicidal manic depressive contraptions that dont work. Go Seagate or WD. I have an IBM which supposedly was meant to be rubbish but has been working with 0 problems for a couple of years.

I have a 20Gb HD at work that died. Guess what, its a Maxtor...

Best luck here with IBM, WD, Seagate in that order.
