Cripes! How old is this game? 93? 94? And then my roommate picks up the playstation version for me and I'm sucked right back into it. I had heard that the AI was broken for the PC version and would revert to beginner after a set period of time. The aliens do seem a lot more accurate than I remember and the challenge only makes the game that much more entertaining.

If you have not played this game, it is truly one of the finest in video game history. Turn based tactical squad combat for ground missions with a global view in real time where you make all your financial/construction/research decisions.

The deal is this: Aliens start aggressively raiding earth and you have to fight back by shooting their UFOs down and essentially mugging the survivors for equipment that you can research and start using against them. Over the course of time the aliens start hitting you with more frequent attacks, attempting to terrorize city populations to undermine your government sponsors, and just bringing out more serious whup ass stuff to bare on you that you can research.

Stuff you can research includes equipment for troops and vehicles, new vehicles, new base structures, etc... It's a lot of stuff and a lot of it is also human specific as you can innovate on their tech and get really cool stuff like powered armor. One of my faves is the blaster launcher, a ridiculously powerful missile launcher that can be guided along nine nav points to hit just about anything that isn't in a completely enclosed structure. That is if you can see it and their !@#$ing sectoid leaders don't start mindcontrolling you first. But then, you can research psionics too.

It is awesome and it is eating my soul.

One of the best cames of all time.

there were several sequels to it, but they were never quite as good as the original.

Keep hoping some smart bugger buys the rights, and using todays technology, makes an homage to the original.

Terror was an interesting rehash, but could have used some more of its own technology. And lordy those terror missions were just excessive. Having to check every single toilet on a full scale cruise ship for enemies is not what I call "fun." Being able to drop multiple grenades on enemies was fun though. By the end of my games in that, most of my guys had better throwing accuracy then shooting.

I like Apocalypse more than most and still occasionally play it. You can tell it meant to be a LOT more than they had time for but I liked the city interface and most of the starting equipment in the game was actually quite useful. That and I kept finding new stuff. On the final level in the alien dimension for instance, you can actually get a teleportation device, abandon the mission, and then run back to HQ and research it. Makes beating up on the cultists pretty darn amusing.
